Television Advertising Designer Overview

Television ad designers create visual advertising messages for television placement. Using a mix of creativity, psychology, and marketing techniques, television ad designers produce a wide range of promotional spots meant to be remembered by the consumer.

As a television ad designer, you are responsible for conceptualizing, designing, developing, and executing on-air advertising campaigns. This could also include animation work using design software including Illustrator, After Effects, and Photoshop.

The advertising industry is competitive and demanding, and although designers are spared some of this stress, it is important to realize that working in this field may mean long days, late hours, and a good bit of competition.

Television Advertising Designer Training & Education

Most television ad designers have an associate or bachelor’s degree. Whether they are held at a community college or a university, most advertising design programs have the goal of developing a student’s ability to take a project from concept to execution. Through a mixture of theory and hands-on studio time, television ad design students are trained to use technology to craft and communicate messages.

Most television ad designers work on the Macintosh platform using a variety of design software. Training in this software is vital, particularly for designers who wish to incorporate higher-level animation into their work.
