Web Design Career Overview

In 1995, only .4% of the global population used the Internet. Now, only 14 years later, nearly 24% of the population uses the Internet according to Internet Growth Statistics. These numbers suggest that more and more businesses and people will be looking for Web designers to help get them get on the Web and connected to their prospects on a global scale. For Web designers, the future has never looked brighter.

Web design comprises designing and maintaining Web sites for various clients. Similar to print designers, Web designers look at the visual aspects of Web pages and make sure that the icons, images, photographs, text boxes, and the general layout of the Website is aesthetically pleasing and informative for visitors. Web designers are also called information developers/designers or Web developers.

Web designers must have an extensive understanding of computer scripting and programming languages such as HTML, PHP and CSS. As reported by the American Institute of Graphic Arts, Web design is all about translating a message from technical jargon into plain English in order to effectively establish a company’s presence on the Web.

Web Design Education & Training

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that most companies and clients look for a Web designer with a degree in graphic design, information systems, or computer science and/or certification in certain scripting and programming languages.

Many graphic and print designers are returning to school to obtain further education in Web design, either for an advanced degree in information services, computer science or specific certification in Web development. Additional certification in scripting, programming, and server developing are also beneficial as a way to validate your skills to potential employers. This may include Microsoft certification, Sun certification, HTML certification, PHP certification, and many others.

Web designers with advanced degrees such as MBA in technology management or MBA in information systems will have the best opportunities for management and senior level positions.

Web Design Career & Salary Outlook

Certified Web designers work in a variety of different environments. Many Web designers work on a freelance basis, meeting with various clients and fulfilling their Web development needs. Web designers work in design studio or consultancy agencies, advertising agencies, publishing houses, Web development firms, in house design departments of small and large corporations, as well as in the comfort of their own home.

According to the AIGA Aquent Survey of Design Salaries, Web designers made an average of $55,000 annually with the top 30% making $70,000 in 2008. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that Web designers can expect a 37% increase in employment by 2016.

Web designers with advanced education, computing and communication skills as well as an extensive understanding of Web marketing, visual design and consumerism, will have the best job prospects in the future.

Characteristics of Successful Web Designers

Web design combines technical computing and Internet programming with non-technical graphic design, visual aesthetics, and even sociology and consumerism. Therefore courses in scripting, applications and computer theory should be complemented with courses like art theory, design history, and sociology. Most Web designers work directly with clients and companies and thus, must have excellent communication skills, as well as a firm understanding of how Web marketing works.
